Red Bastard (USA) is a bold and provocative character created and performed by Eric Davis, a seasoned clown, actor, and director. Trained in classical theatre and bouffon at institutions like the Dell'Arte International School and under Philippe Gaulier, Davis blends satire, audience interaction, and physical theatre in his performances. Red Bastard is known for breaking the fourth wall, challenging audiences to confront their fears, lies, and desires. With a red, bulbous costume and a confrontational style, the character has garnered acclaim at festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh Fringe and Just for Laughs. Davis uses the character not just for shock or laughs, but to push boundaries and provoke transformation. Through Red Bastard, he redefines the role of the clown as both trickster and truth-teller.
“Bouffon Eric Davis has created the most wonderful in-your‑face act: his Red Bastard is all arse and belly with delicate legs and arms poking out … Physically grotesque, but it is verbally that this bouffon act really takes the audience apart … In short no one is safe.” - British Theatre Guide
“It’s offensive, off‑putting, uncomfortable and fantastic, a terrifying combination of the improvisational, the improbable and the impossible.” - Broadway Baby
“Probably one of the strangest experiences of my entire life. … He asks a lot of very personal questions, puts people in difficult and sometimes extremely uncomfortable positions, and allows us all to judge each other whilst forcing us also to judge ourselves.” - Voice Magazine
“What a bastard! A good, clever, stupid, sexy, perverse, demonic bastard! … It’s the most honest, enjoyable at times squirm‑inducing but always entertaining hour I’ve spent in a theatre space for some time … It’s got so much audience participation … life changing moments …” - Fringe Review
